The last months I had to do a lot for university an so I haven’t had the time to work on the Treo 650. But this is not the only reason. The biggest problem now is, that I couldn’t boot a current kernel because cocoboot freezes…

My aim is to try to run FSO (or here) on the Treo to see how it can be useful to talk to the GSM part. So stay tuned… 😉

Today I get a working rootfs for my Palm treo 650. I build it with the MokoMakefile from Openmoko project.

Diese Woche ist mein Treo 650 angekommen. Es ist ein tolles Gerät, auch wenn es schon etwas in die Jahre gekommen ist, an Funktionalität hat es nicht verloren.

So bin ich dann auch gleich in den letzten Tagen mit der GPS Maus los und habe ein paar Straßen getrackt und sie dann mit JOSM aufbereitet. JOSM ist echt ein cooles Programm und ziemlich einfach zu handhaben. Da es ein Javaprogramm ist, kann ich es auch überall auf meinem Stick mitnehmen und meine Tracks an jedem PC bearbeiten. Echt praktisch.

So…ich habe mich jetzt entschieden und mich von jeglicher PDA Hardware getrennt, d.h. kein MDA Pro mehr, kein Palm TX mehr. Das Interesse an OpenMoko etc. nimmt mir zuviel von meiner Zeit, sodass ich mich dazu entschlossen habe. Die Uni u.a. nehmen mich gerade sehr in Anspruch, so habe ich eh keine Zeit mehr dafür. Aber das heißt nicht, dass es für immer vorbei ist. Ich warte auf die zweite Generation der OpenMoko Geräte und bin gespannt, was da kommen wird.

Gestern ist mein MDA Pro gekommen, da ich meinen TX verkaufe. Es ist schon ein echt cooles Gerät, aber dafür auch sehr groß und schwer.

Naja, habe natürlich auch gleich wieder probiert Linux (OpenMoko und Qtopia) zum laufen zu bekommen und es hat alles ohne große Schwierigkeiten geklappt.

Leider habe ich es noch nicht geschafft die Telefonfunktion zum laufen zu bekommen, aber mein Rechner baut noch an einem aktuellen Image 😉

After a few days with some problems to build an OpenMoko *.ext2 image for my TX I get the new UI run on the Palm TX!

Here is a quick guide:

1. Get the TX-Kernel from here and unpack all to the SD-card.
2. Download the rootfs, copy to the /linux folder on your card and rename to rootfs.ext2 or build your on rootfs with the MokoMakefile (you have to edit the /build/conf/local.conf and set MACHINE=“palmtx“, IMAGE_FSTYPES = „ext2“, IMAGE_ROOTFS_SIZE_ext2=102400)
3. Edit /etc/Xserver to adjust the DPI settings and add:
   „Palm TX“)
   ARGS=“$ARGS -dpi 150 -screen 320×480 -hide-cursor -root-ppm /usr/share/pixmaps/xsplash.ppm“ ;;
4. Generate a swap file: dd if=/dev/zero of=swap.fs bs=1024 count=65536 and copy it to the /linux directory on your card.
5. Tap Cocoboot and see OpenMoko booting!

Die letzten Tage habe ich versucht OpenMoko auf meinem Palm TX zu starten. Mein Ziel ist es die neue Version von OpenMoko, OpenMoko 2007.2, auf dem Palm TX zu starten. Bisher hatte ich nur Erfolg die erste Version zum Laufen zu bekommen. Das UI ist sehr langsam, aber es funktioniert alles. Mit der Skalierung gab es bis auf die Tastatur keine Probleme.

Nun bin ich dabei eine Version von OpenMoko 2007.2 für den Palm zu „builden“. Ich werde weiter berichten.
